3 Reasons Why You Should Support Chai-Town A Capella

The title of this post was designed to get you to this very page that you are currently reading (and I guess it worked). Now that you’re here, my next call to action will be to get you to help fund the next album from this wonderful South Asian A Capella group from the University of Illinois – Urbana Champaign. If you don’t want to hear any additional persuasive commentary from me, simply proceed to their recording project page where you can donate. For your support, you will get their album at a discount (and many other perks depending on how generous you are feeling at the moment).

For those of you unfamiliar with Chai-Town (and their utter awesomeness) please continue to the list below…

Reason Number ONE: (this alone did the trick for me)

Reason Number TWO: (learn more about them)

Chai-Town A cappella was formed at the University of Illinois, when a group of young men came together with their love for music. They wanted to show how two seemingly different cultures can fuse together to produce something great. This vision has grown into Chai-Town A cappella. As one of the country’s premiere Hindi-English A capella groups, Chai-Town has gone on to perform across the nation from North Carolina to California. Recently Chai-Town won the annual Anahat Competion, which show cases Hindi-English a cappella groups from across the nation. However it is our hope, that with these accomplishments, we are just getting started.  – chaitown.org

Also, put some faces to the names with this lovely video.

Reason Number THREE: (the selfish one)

If you know me you know I really enjoy singing… in the shower, in the car, when I’m alone in the house, etc. For years now I have been conflicted because I am always singing songs from other South Asian a capella groups from the East coast and West coast (Penn Masala and Raagapella). As a Chicagoan and an Illini, I have longed for some Midwestern representation in my “shower sing-a-longs playlist.” Finally, this group has put together an amazing list of tracks that I want to learn. Come’on people, help me out and show these kids some love so I can get their CD!

If you need more convincing (what more do you want!?), check out their YouTube channel and watch their performances. Some personal favorites (besides Reason #1) are Insomniac (this goes way back to the founders), Kissed By A Rose, Amplifer, & Rockin’. I just saw them perform some of these at their fall concert on campus last night. These kids are really committed to what they do – school and singing and it’s a lot of fun to see the latter in action. Did I mention one of the perks of donating is tickets to Chai Town’s Spring concert in 2012? Proceed to their recording project page 🙂
